Dr. Joanna Siekiera

Dr. Joanna Siekiera is an international lawyer, legal advisor, Doctor of Social Sciences in public policy sciences from Poland. She works as a postdoctoral researcher at the Faculty of Law, University of Bergen and is part of the OCEANSTATES project. Her research concerns the legal consequences of ocean change and sovereignty of states in Oceania. She was granted 2 Norwegian scholarships: by Centre Universitaire de Norvège à Paris in March 2020 in two institutions in Paris (Institut de relations internationales et stratégiques, and Institut du Pacifique) on the topic “French EEZs in the Pacific in the context of ocean change”, and UiB’s “Momentum career development program for early-stage researchers” in 2021. In 2022, Dr. Siekiera was a crew member of the One Ocean Expedition on board of the Statsraad Lehmkuhl sailing across the Pacific Ocean and teaching 90 international students on the topics related to the law of the sea, sustainable development and Pacific regionalization.

Dr. Siekiera did her PhD studies in New Zealand, at the Faculty of Law, Victoria University of Wellington on Pacific regionalism. She is engaged in UiB’s science diplomacy [its ocean branch] endeavors though participating in international seminars, summer schools, publications, as well as a co-investigator at the grant at the University of Southampton “Global comparative assessment of the role of oceans in a sustainable future”.
